FO: EZ’s PI shawl

EZ 100th Anniversary PI Shawl

The EZ 100th Anniversary PI Shawl was my large knitting project for the summer of 2010.

This shawl is a pattern by Mwaa Knit, she gives the following description on Ravelry:
Elizabeth Zimmermann was born on August 9th, 1910 (8/9/10), so this year 2010 is the 100th anniversary of her birth. This shawl was designed as a tribute to EZ and a celebration of all she has done for us. It is based on her PI Shawl which can be found in her book Knitter’s Almanac.”

It was my second attempt to knit a Pi-shawl. In the summer of 2009 I started the Pi Shawl from EZ’s almanac with a green merino-silk yarn. I frogged it; the yarn was to thin for me to work with. In my stash I had 3 skeins of Filcolana New Zealand Lammeuld.  I bought them in the colorway sereng (130) in 2007 I guess. It was one of those yarns I want to knit with for the 10in2010 challenge. It originally had a dull pink color (why did I buy yarn in this color??). I over-dyed the yarn with Landscape Dyes in the color Clematis. It turned out a great purple, semi solid with lighter and darker parts giving the yarn a vivid appearance. Light fingering weight seems better to me to knit a large shawl with then the thin dental tread like lace-weight.

So I lets give it a try.

I’ve started it with a crochet cast on in the center at April 19, 2010 and bind off 1154 stitches at August 4, 2010. I’ve knitted the shawl with 4mm and 4.5 mm KnitPro wooden needles. I have used about 1200 meters of yarn. The diameter of the shawl is about 130 cm.

Although the pattern isn’t that of a challenge, actually it is real easy with the 8 stitch pattern repeats. Knitting lot’s of those endless rows of 572 stitches became boring in the end. I had to knit at least to rows every night to finish the shawl before Augustus 9. Yet I did it, it is an FO and blocked too!

… Blocking the shawl was a party! I needed weight to keep the shawl in shape; that’s when the bottles of our collection of whiskey’s became handy tools. After pinning the shawl in place, I sure could you a drip ;-)

I still have one (1) complete skein of the yarn  (100 gram / 600 meters) left.
Please let me know I you are interested in it to trade it with something from your stash.
