Vanmorgen heb ik mijn stash weer eens lekker gelucht, nagekeken op eventuele motten (gelukkkig niet aanwezig), gesorteerd op kleur en project. Het is fijn om te zien en voelen wat je hebt. De liefde voor een aantal garens is echter voorbij. Voor deze bollen zoek ik een nieuw huis waar ze wel tot hun recht komen en liefdevol tot project worden verwerkt.

De garens in het overzicht met een * (sterretje) voor de naam zijn handgeverfd en/of handgesponnen, deze verkoop ik via mijn webshop MoonWise. Er is niets mis met deze garens, stuk voor stuk fijn en goed gesponnen. Echter is het niet mijn kleur.

Beurs buit! / New stash bought at the Fair

Yesterday I was at the Handwerkbeurs, a craft fair, in Zwolle, invited to be present at the sock knitters table. With the  knitted socks and some hand dyed yarns and photobooks I presented my three sock patterns. I was a lovely, yet very impressive day. There were a lot of visitors and a lot of people interested in knitting socks.

In the Netherlands most women are familiar with knitting socks with four large needles tucked under their arm. Knitting with little bamboo or wooden needles or a circular needle isn’t common practice, not to mention knitting a sock toe-up or even two at once.  Luckily there is an avid sock knitting community in the Netherlands, active knitting in public to demonstrate how socks are knitted nowadays.

That’s what I did yesterday most of the time; showing people the techniques and methods. Explaining the advantages of methods and materials. Enthuse people to start knitting socks themselves or trying a new kind of needle or technique. Showing the ease of knitting socks with a circular knitting needle, while talking to people, convinced them to give it a try. I think the circular knitting needles sold well at the fair :-)

Besides that, I helped some people with their knitting problems. How to avoid holes between the gusset and heel, how to work cables without a cableneedle, choosing yarn for specific socks and so on.

Being at the craft fair also means buying new stash (of course!), talking to shopowners about the new materials and books, meeting people from Ravelry and other groups in real life. Sharing stories, showing the new bought stash, looking at each other knitting projects ….

I didn’t notice any effect of an economical crisis yesterday;-) Actually, I save my money to spend it on the fair.

Bart & Francis had a large booth with their amazing yarns. I bought four cones for a weaving project, it will be a throw or be worked in a weaving for a jacket. Astrid’s Dutch Obsessions for tree skeins of Evilla artyarn for weaving a ruana in some nice green and purple colors. I preordered some stuff at Wolhalla; a few balls of Trekking sockyarn for knitting stranded socks, the book the Eclectic sole, a nice purple pin for my wraps.

Marlies showed me the supersoft Mini Mochi yarn of Crystal Palace.  It wasn’t on my shopping list …. this gradient striping soft single spun yarn in green and purple I couldn’t resist. Neither could I resist to buy a ball of Classic Two (Kaalund Yarns) in the color lavender at the booth of 7 katten (7 cats)

On my list were  Knitpro needles points, circulars, cable connectors and tiny glove needles, so I had to visit Yvon. Glinster sockyarn (80% alpaca / 20% silk) is such a tempting yarn, new in the Storm in the Attic collection. It is just a must have! I still have about four or five different types of undyed SoZ yarns in my stash, waiting to get dyed for a specific project. I love to touch and feel this yarn every once in a while, dreaming of the perfect colors, the perfect garment …..

Al those new yarns , I like to get them on the needles right on.

Did it take me a lot of time to figure out my “R” … items for the “S” popped right up! 
Stash & socks! Is that all? What about: spinning, samhain, spiders, SAD (Seasonal affective disorder), soul, salads, spinage, sandelwood, sage, sheep, saturated colors, sensitivity … 

This time the S is for …. sampler skeins!
I have a lot of different fibers in my stash. A few weeks I decided it would be nice to spin bits of them all into sampler skeins. To feel the fiber, find out best ways of spinning them, to see how thin I could spin the fibers – a bit of a reference for myself. Most of it … it is fun to do, look and feel al those samplers.

I have spun 8 different fiber samples untill now.

From top to bottom: 

• Corriedale (4 gram, 7,5 meter), 
• Merino (2 gram, 13 meter), 
• Camel down (5 gram, 22 meter), 
• Kid mohair (2,5 gram, 11 meter), 
• Tussah Silk (abt. 1 gram, 13 meter), 
• Soy silk (less then 1 gram, 8 meter), 
• Tencel (abt. 1 gram, 10 meter) and 
• Ramie (3 gram, 24 meter). 

I didn’t think about how to spin it yet, I just let the fiber lead me. Besides the Camel down all fibers were bought as top/roving. The Camel fibers were collected by a friend in a local Zoo. It was a very dirty with lots of hay and other matter. I got about 12 gram of this stuff. After a thorough clean and removing all the coars tophair, a tiny bit of super soft down was left. I carded the down with my cat’s brushes. A lot of work for a little skein, worth every effort!

I had lack of inspiration for the ABC-along.
Posted my “Q” on september 12, it took me until this morning to figure out my “R“. It was so obvious!
My “R” has to be the roving I bought last week at the Handwerkbeurs in the Van Nelle in Rotterdam. 

It is Blue Faced Leicester roving dyed by Storm in the Attic.
My favorite kind of wool for rovings, dyed in my favorite colors; shades of lilac and purper…

… what a temptation …..

Het was even vet schrikken vanmiddag. Ik ging in mijn doos handgesponnen garens op zoek naar de strengen melkschaap om een paar heerlijk warme huissokken te maken. Natuurlijk ligt de streng die je zoek altijd onderin. Dat heeft zo zijn voordelen bleek vandaag! Ik haalde mijn strengen stuk voor stuk uit de doos. Genieten hoor, die mooie kleuren te zien en zachte spinsels te voelen die nog even wachten op hun bestemming.

Niets vermoedend pakte ik een streng zwarte Alpaca “DarkMoon”. Allerhande prut kwam eruit zetten. Had ik die strengen dan ongewassen vol zand weggeborgen. Nee, dat kon ik me niet voorstellen. Na even schudden kwamen er ook een soort vogelstrontjes uitzetten en zag ik allerhande losse draden aan de streng zitten. Iekss… volgens mij is dit het resultaat van een mot. 

Gruwel! Zoveel al over gehoord en gelezen. Ik dacht toch écht genoeg voorzorgsmaatsregelen te hebben getroffen. Cederhoutjes voorzien van etherische olie in de geur Ceder en Tea Tree. Maar ook van die vieze groene papiertjes tussen de wol, waar ik het zelf al bijna van afleg. Tja, blijkbaar is die heerlijke alpaca toch verleidelijker dan alle voorzorg en ontkom ik nu dit keer niet aan schade van motten. 

Enfin, ik heb vanmiddag dus alle dozen en zakken met wol, vezels, vachten en garens gechecked. Behalve die ene streng niets aan de hand. Gelukkig, dat scheelt weer!

Hoe kan ik die mottenschade niet eerder hebben opgemerkt? Tja, regelmatig heb ik de inhoud van alle dozen in mijn handen, behalve dus deze, waar de strengen wol inzitten. En waarom maar één streng van de vier? En waarom niet die andere heerlijke garens waar ook alpaca en ander lekkers inzit? Ik zal het niet zo weten. Wat ik wel weet, is dat ik de boel toch echt wat vaker zal controleren ;-)
